Should I get insurance to do a HYROX?
06 November 2026
The popularity of HYROX has soared over the last decade, with 2 million people expected to participate in HYROX competitions worldwide over the next year. With a recent study finding that half of HYROX athletes suffer a HYROX-related injury within a 12-month period, you may be wondering whether it’s worth having insurance in place before you compete.
In this blog, we’ll cover whether insurance is a requirement for HYROX events, what specialist insurance cover can include, and whether you’re covered by your travel insurance for HYROX competitions abroad.
Do I need insurance to take part in a HYROX event?
The published 2026/27 UK participation terms and athlete waiver do not list personal sports insurance as a standard entry requirement. Check your chosen event’s booking conditions as well, as specific purchase terms may take precedence.
Being able to enter is a separate question from how you would manage the financial impact of an accident. Think about your sick pay, savings and any insurance you already hold.
The UK waiver describes risks including falls and collisions, and places responsibility for medical treatment and related transport costs on the participant.
For Elite competitors, HYROX strongly advises travel insurance that includes competitive sport, medical treatment and repatriation. That is a recommendation, not the same as a mandatory entry condition. Professional or Elite participation also needs separate confirmation from your insurer.
Specialist HYROX insurance should not be treated as a replacement for your travel insurance, but you may want to consider getting specialist sports insurance cover in addition to your travel insurance to provide financial protection for your participation in competitive fitness racing, including Loss of Earnings, Public Liability, and Equipment cover.
What can sports insurance cover during HYROX training and competitions?
Whether you’re training for your first HYROX race or coaching others through their preparations, specialist HYROX insurance can help protect you financially if something goes wrong.
Injuries can happen before race day, too. Around 1 in 10 HYROX athletes reported an injury during a competition, and nearly 1 in 3 during training. If the injury you sustained were to leave you unable to do your usual job, specialist HYROX insurance may be able to cover some of the costs with Loss of Earnings cover.
Other cover options offered through Insure4Sport can include:
- Public Liability: help with compensation and approved legal costs if you accidentally injure someone else or damage their property and are legally responsible.
- Equipment: help replacing your own insured training kit if it’s stolen. This can include theft from a securely locked locker with signs of forced entry. You’ll need proof of ownership and must meet the policy’s storage conditions.
- Hospitalisation: a cash benefit available under some Personal Accident options if an insured injury means you need to stay in hospital for more than 24 hours.
Check the policy documents for further detail on what is and isn’t covered.
Would a typical travel insurance policy cover HYROX competitions?
Planning a trip around your next HYROX race? Check with your travel insurer before you book. A policy that covers your holiday or an ordinary gym session may not cover an organised fitness competition.
Tell your insurer where you’re going and which race category you’re entering. Ask specifically whether you’ll be covered for emergency medical treatment and getting you home if you’re injured while competing. This should give you a clearer answer than simply asking whether the policy covers ‘sport’.
Sports insurance and travel insurance can cover different things. Sports insurance by Insure4Sport can include a worldwide extension that broadens where your sports cover applies, but it doesn’t replace travel insurance and doesn’t include medical treatment or repatriation. If you’re racing overseas, check both policies, so you know what each provides.
What should I check before arranging insurance for HYROX?
If you decide to get specialist sports insurance, the type and level of cover you choose is entirely up to you. Think about what you’d like cover for during training and competition. That might be an accidental injury, time off work, a liability claim or damage to your own equipment.
Then check these details:
- Your role: are you taking part, coaching others or organising a team? Sports insurance by Insure4Sport can cover participants, coaches, and teams.
- Where you’ll be covered: you may want to confirm which countries are included, how long your cover applies abroad and any territorial restrictions.
- Your chosen benefits: check the cover amounts, excesses, and waiting periods so you understand when you could claim and how much you could receive.
- Your policy documents: read your schedule, policy booklet, the activities covered and any endorsements that change the standard terms.

Frequently asked questions about HYROX insurance
Does my gym’s insurance cover me during HYROX training?
The gym may have insurance for its own liabilities, but that does not establish personal accident or earnings benefits for you. If the gym was responsible for an injury, a liability claim is a separate matter.
Do I need different insurance if I coach HYROX sessions?
Tell the insurer that you teach and describe your qualifications and sessions. Coaching can involve claims about professional instruction as well as accidents. To be eligible for a sports coaching insurance policy through Insure4Sport, you must have the relevant qualification by a recognised governing body for the activities and level at which you teach.
Explore sports coaching insurance and confirm HYROX eligibility for that role.
