  • We offer policies for personal trainers, fitness & sports coaches, sports teams and individual players/participants. The type of policy you select should match what you are looking to cover i.e. a team/sports club, coach/PT or individual player/participant.

We offer a non-advisory service so unfortunately, we're not able to advise on what cover you need however we can provide some information on what our policies provide so that you can choose what is best for you.

Under our policies we offer cover for Public Liability (includes FREE Professional Indemnity cover), Personal Accident with the option to protect Loss of Earnings, Sports Equipment and Worldwide cover. We also offer cover for Employer's Liability under our Coaches and Teams policies.

The level and type of cover you need really is up to you. Our policies are built around you so you can choose your cover from a wide range of options available. You can choose from:

    • Public Liability – up to £10m to protect your legal liability should a third-party be injured, or third-party property be damaged, through your negligence whilst training a client or engaging in your insured sport, and then that third-party wanted to sue you. This covers costs like compensation, court fees and solicitor fees. The injury or damage needs to have occurred during a match or training session that you took part in.
    • Professional Indemnity – included free with Public Liability. This protects you if advice you give results in a client or participant being injured. It also covers breaches of professional duty such as defamation, confidentiality issues, or alleged errors or negligence that lead to a client suffering financial loss or injury.
    • Participant to Participant – covers your legal liability if, through your instruction or advice, one client or participant injures another.
    • Personal Accident – provides up to £50,000 in compensation if you suffer death or a serious injury while coaching, training, or taking part in your chosen sport.
    • Loss of Earnings – provides up to £750 a week cover if you injure yourself whilst coaching or training and are unable to work (available with Personal Accident cover).
    • Sports Equipment – provides up to £50,000 cover against theft, loss or damage whether it’s at home, at work or whilst it’s being used. What’s more, we offer free cover on the first £250 worth of equipment. This means for example, if you wish to insure £750 of equipment, you will only pay for £500 worth.
    • Employers' Liability – provides up to £10m in compensation for employees who suffer illness or injury as a result of their work duties, whether the incident occurs on or off site.
    • Worldwide – up to 6 months cover abroad.

If you are not sure what cover you need or which level of cover to select we would recommend speaking to any venues you plan to use for training as well as your employer (if applicable) as they should be able to advise on the minimum level of cover that they require you to hold.

    • Worldwide – up to 6 months cover abroad.
  • We offer three types of policies, depending on whether you’re coaching, taking part, or running a team.

    1. Coaches & Instructors

Coaches Policy – this is designed to cover coaches/instructors who teach individuals, small groups or teams.

Will also provide cover for the named coach/instructors to take part in the named sport as a participant.

This policy is designed for anyone who is qualified to coach or instruct athletes. It covers you to train any number of teams and isn’t tied to one specific group.

    Cover options

    • Public Liability protection if you’re sued for causing injury to someone else (including a participant) or damaging third party property
    • Cover for legal costs such as solicitor fees, court fees and compensation
    • Personal Accident, Loss of Earnings, Employer’s Liability and Sports Equipment cover available for the coaches named on the policy.
    • This policy also provides cover for the named coach/instructors to take part in the selected sports as a participant.
    • We also offer a Personal Trainer policy, which provides the same options for cover as our standard coaching policies.

    2. Players & Participants

This policy is for individual athletes who want cover whilst training or taking part in sport. It isn’t linked to a specific team, and you can train anywhere in the UK, or worldwide if selected.

Multiple sports/activities can be listed, and you may train with multiple teams at any venue.

There is no cover provided for any coaching/instruction of any kind.

    Cover options

    • Public Liability protection if you’re sued for injuring someone else or damaging their property
    • Cover for legal costs such as solicitor fees, court fees and compensation
    • Personal Accident, Loss of Earnings and Sports Equipment cover for the named participant.

    3. Teams

This policy is ideal for groups such as cheerleading, football and netball teams or other organised squads. It covers all members of the named team and their coach while training or competing together.

    Cover options

    • Cover for all team members and the team’s coach (the coach is insured only to coach the team named on the policy)
    • Public Liability protection if a team member or coach is sued for injuring a third party or damaging third party property
    • Cover for legal costs such as solicitor fees, court fees and compensation
    • Personal Accident, Loss of Earnings, Employer’s Liability and Sports Equipment cover for all named team members and the team’s coach.
    • If you run a club with multiple teams
    • You can insure all teams belonging to the same club under one Teams policy. You just need to ensure you select the correct number of teams based on your club, and every member of those teams is covered.

Here are some examples of having multiple teams in a club:

    • Teams based on ages: Under 10s, Under 16s and Under 21s would count as three separate teams if they train or compete separately.
    • Teams based on ability: If the club is split by ability, for example a beginners team, intermediate team and expert team, this would be classed as having 3 teams within the club as these would be 3 groups that train and compete separately.
    • If all members of the club always train and compete together, they would be classed as one team.

Choosing the Right Policy: The type of policy you need depends on what you want to insure.

  • What is Public Liability insurance?

Public Liability will cover your legal liability should a third-party be injured, or third-party property be damaged, through your negligence whilst training a client or engaging in your insured sport, and then that third-party wanted to sue you. This covers costs like compensation, court fees and solicitor fees. The injury or damage needs to have occurred during a match or training session that you took part in.

Below are four examples of why you might need Public Liability Insurance:

    • Example 1 - You’re coaching or instructing someone, and they injure themselves. They hold you responsible for their injuries and make a claim against you.
    • Example 2 - You’re playing as an athlete (for instance, in tennis), and you seriously injure another player, who then brings legal action against you.
    • Example 3 - You’re a personal trainer, and the client you’re training damages gym equipment that doesn’t belong to you during one of your sessions. You’re held accountable, and a claim is made against you by the owner of the equipment.
    • Example 4 - You leave a kit bag lying around, and someone trips over it and hurts themselves. They hold you responsible for their injuries and make a claim against you.

    What is Professional Indemnity insurance?

Whenever you take out Public Liability insurance with Insure4Sport, you also get Professional Indemnity cover included for free. This protects you if a client or participant claims that your advice or guidance caused them injury or financial loss.

For example, if you showed someone how to use a piece of equipment incorrectly and they later injured themselves while training alone, they could try to sue you for negligent advice — and this cover would support you.

Professional Indemnity also protects you against breaches of professional duty, such as defamation, confidentiality issues, or mistakes that lead to a client suffering financial loss.

    Examples include:

    • A work laptop containing sensitive information being stolen
    • Accidentally sending confidential business details to the wrong client
  • Employers' Liability will protect you if one of your employees claims against you for an injury or illness that they suffered while working for you that they feel is down to your negligence. This claim can relate to an injury or illness that occurred on or off-site. If you employ volunteers, you can still select this cover.

For example: An employee is injured whilst using some of your sports equipment to train a client and then they want to claim against you.

Do you need Employers' Liability Insurance?

Because Employers’ Liability is a legal requirement, it’s important to be certain whether you need it. You may still be classed as an employer even if the people working with you are self-employed, subcontractors, volunteers, or work experience students.

You are likely to need to arrange EL Cover if any of the following are true:

    1. You deduct national insurance and income tax from the money you pay a worker
    2. You have the right to control where they work and how they do it
    3. You supply their work materials and equipment
    4. You have the right to any profit your workers make, even if you choose to share it with them through commission, profit share etc.
    5. You require that person specifically to provide the service and they cannot employ a substitute if they are unable to work
    6. They are treated in the same way as other employees e.g. they do the same work under the same conditions as someone else you employ

Further details can be found at: GOV.UK | Employer's Liability Insurance.

  • Personal Accident

    • Personal Accident will compensate you up to specific amounts if you, yourself, were to suffer a serious bodily injury whilst training your clients or participating in the insured sport. The injury needs to have occurred during a match or training session that you took part in.

You will be insured up to the limits as set out in your insurance schedule which you can choose at the point of purchasing the insurance. Cover of up to £50,000 is available.

Excesses apply to the following sections.

    • Dental – 50% of the claimed amount
    • Hospitalisation – time in hospital must exceed 24 hours
    • Physio – 25% of the claimed amount
    • Please note that this is not Travel Insurance so our policy would not provide any cover for medical bills, rescue or repatriation.

    Loss of Earnings

If you select Personal Accident cover with your policy, you will have the option to include cover against Loss of Earnings.

The Loss of Earnings cover provides compensation for lost earnings should you suffer a serious injury whilst training a client or engaging in your insured sport which prevents you from attending your usual profession, business or occupation. The injury needs to have occurred during a match or training session that you took part in.

Cover is available up to £750 per week and the maximum amount payable per week would be the limit selected, or 75% of your pre-accident earnings, whichever is the lesser.

Please be aware that a time excess of 14 days applies as we do not cover the first 2 weeks that you are unable to work.

  • Sports Equipment insurance provides cover against theft and accidental damage to your equipment.

The cover applies both when you are engaging in your sport or training clients and when it is securely stored in a premises, changing room or any securely locked locker or other similar place of storage. Your equipment is also covered for theft from a motor vehicle provided that it is kept in a locked boot or covered storage area.

Your equipment is covered on a new for old basis if it was purchased from new and less than 12 months old at the time of the loss. Any equipment which you have not purchased from new, or if it is more than 12 months old, is covered on an indemnity value basis (this is the value of the item immediately prior to the loss or damage, taking into account the items age and condition).

The maximum value of equipment we can insure is £50,000 and the following single article limits apply:

    Sports Equipment: £2,500

    Personal Possession: £250

Please be aware that we cannot cover any pedal cycles or mobile phones.

An excess of £50.00 applies to all Sports Equipment claims.

Below are recent examples of why you might need equipment cover. We have previously dealt with claims for the following scenarios:

    Theft

    • Example 1 - Your sports equipment is kept in the locked boot of your car, and someone breaks into your car and steals it.
    • Example 2 - You’re a personal trainer conducting an outdoor training session in a park, and you bring bags of equipment with you and someone steals your bags and rides off on their bike.
    • Example 3 - You run boxing sessions from a community centre. Overnight, someone cuts the bolt off the door, breaks in, and steals your boxing equipment.

    Damage

    • Example 1 - You store your sports equipment in a building, and someone targets the building in an arson attack. Your equipment is damaged beyond repair.
    • Example 2 - You’re working on the laptop you use for work purposes, and you accidentally drop it on the floor. It won’t turn on, and it’s so badly damaged it requires specialist repair.
    • Example 3 - You’re taking part in a sport like paddle boarding, and your board gets swept away in the wind and damaged.

  • We offer free multi-sport cover with our coaches/instructors, personal trainer and players/participants policies. With our multi-sport cover, you're covered for any sports that you're qualified to teach which also fall into the same risk category and below. Each sport we cover has a risk category from A to E.

You can find out which sports fall into which risk category by checking the Insurance Scope Document.

    Here are a few examples:

If you have a player's/participant's policy for playing basketball, you would be automatically covered to participate in any of the sports listed in categories A and B on the insurance scope, as basketball is a category B sport.

If you are a Personal Trainer you would normally have a category A policy meaning you are covered to coach any other category A sport that you are qualified to teach. So if you gain a new qualification for a category A sport, you are covered to start coaching as soon as you are qualified without needing to update your policy.

As standard you normally need to have a qualification that is recognised by a UK governing body, OR have at least 3 years’ experience in coaching the sport you wish to teach which must be evidenced, this can be with payslips, tax returns etc.

If you are coaching any of the following sports, specific qualification or experience conditions apply:

    • Gymnastics and Trampolining
    • Football/Soccer
    • Boxing
    • Pole Fitness/Pole Dancing
    • Aerial Activities
    • Mountaineering
    • Climbing
    • Paragliding/Hang Gliding
    • Shooting
    • Off-Piste
    • Sailing
    • Water Depths (Scuba Diving)

You can find the conditions of these sports on pages 19/20 of the Insurance Booklet found on our Important Documents page.

Need cover for a sport in a higher risk category? If you ever need cover for a sport in a higher category, for example if you are covered up to category B but want cover for a category D sport, you would need to update your policy to include cover for that sport. Whether you're mid-term or wanting to change your renewal, the quickest way to update your cover is via your online account. Log in to your Members Area to get started.

Please be aware that we cannot offer the multi-sport cover for a Teams' policy as this type of policy will only cover the insured team to train and compete in the named sport.

This is a more expensive way to insure as paying monthly via Premium Credit Ltd does incur interest. You can check a breakdown for the monthly costs at the payment page when checking a quote for a policy.

Please note: A credit search will be carried out which will leave a footprint.

  • Premium Credit is the leading premium finance company in the UK and Ireland.

When you choose to pay monthly for your insurance policy with us, your credit agreement will be provided by Premium Credit.

Please note: A credit search will be carried out which will leave a footprint. Interest charges apply.

  • If you need to discuss your Premium Credit agreement please contact Premium Credit on 0344 736 9836.

  • The reason that you have been charged 2 payments is because these are the first 2 out of your 10 monthly payments for your policy.

When a policy renews, our partners Premium Credit will collect the first 2 out of the 10 monthly payments from you around the same day. This is due to the first payment after renewal taking up to 10 working days to be set up and then your payments continue as normal on the usual payment date so the first 2 payments will be taken close together or even on the same day. However, this does not impact the cost of your insurance in any way and can confirm that you would only have 8 monthly payments due for this year.

  • If you have chosen to pay for your insurance policy monthly, there are fees applicable for missed payments or if your credit agreement has not be completed.

If you are seeing any additional fees on your statement and have a monthly instalment plan with Premium Credit, you will need to contact them on 0344 736 9836.
