Sports Team Insurance FAQs
  • If you and a group of friends want insurance so you can enjoy playing a team sport together, even if you’re not an official or formal team, we’ve got you covered. Our Teams policy is designed for organised groups like cheerleading squads, but it works just as well for an informal football team, a casual weekly netball group, or any bunch of friends who simply want to play a sport safely with proper protection in place - even if you’re not a registered team.

You would need a main policyholder who is responsible for the administration & payment for the policy. All you need then is a team name, and to keep a register of when, where & who is playing at each session as you will be required to present this in the event of a claim.

Our teams policy would cover all members of the named team and their coach (if the team has one) while training or competing together.

    What’s included

    • Cover for team members and the team’s coach (the coach is insured only to coach the team named on the policy)
    • Public Liability protection if a team member or coach is sued for injuring a third party or damaging third party property
    • Cover for legal costs such as solicitor fees, court fees and compensation
    • Personal Accident, Loss of Earnings, Employer’s Liability and Sports Equipment cover for all named team members and the team’s coach.

If you’re unsure which level of cover to choose, it’s always worth checking with the venues where you plan to train or play. Many facilities have their own insurance requirements and may ask you to show proof of a specific level of cover before you can use their space.

This way, you and your friends can focus on enjoying the game, knowing you’ve got the right protection behind you.

  • You can insure all teams belonging to the same club under one Teams policy. You just need to ensure you select the correct number of teams based on your club, and every member of those teams is covered.

Here are some examples of having multiple teams in a club:

    • Teams based on ages: Under 10s, Under 16s and Under 21s would count as three separate teams if they train or compete separately.
    • Teams based on ability: If the club is split by ability, for example a beginner’s team, intermediate team and expert team, this would be classed as having 3 teams within the club as these would be 3 groups that train and compete separately.
    • If all members of the club always train and compete together, they would be classed as one team.

Please be aware that we are unable to provide cover for leagues or competitions where all competing teams are insured with us.

  • You would need a main policyholder who is named on the policy and is responsible for the administration & payment for the policy. All you need then is a team name, and to keep a register of when, where & who is playing at each session as you will be required to present this in the event of a claim.

  • Absolutely, whenever you select a team policy, the coach(es) of that team/club are automatically covered but only when they are working in connection with the insured team/club.

If the coach also needs cover to coach separate teams or clubs then they would need additional cover to insure them whilst not working with the team you’re insuring.

  • Our policy covers your team to play anywhere in the UK as standard (provided that you have permission from the venue you’re playing/training at). However, you do have the option to extend your cover Worldwide for up to 180 days out of the year. This extends the cover you select with the policy to cover you anywhere in the world.

All members of the team and their coach must be UK residents, living in the UK for at least 6 months out of the year.

We do not offer any Travel Insurance so we cannot cover any costs for Medical Bills, Rescue or Repatriation. If you need cover for this type of cost then you would need to purchase a Travel Insurance policy.

Please be aware that any claims brought against you must be made in a UK court and we cannot cover any Public Liability claims made within countries which operate under the laws of the United States of America or Canada.

  • There is no age restriction for the members of the team however you may need to insure multiple teams if the players belonging to the club are split into different groups to train and compete based on their ages.

Here are some examples of having multiple teams in a club:

Please be aware that there is an age restriction which applies to the Accidental Death cover offered under Personal Accident and the compensation provided for Accidental Death for any under 18s is reduced to 20% of the selected cover limit following an accepted claim.

  • We are unable to provide any cover to professional teams. However, if the semi-pro team members earn less than 50% of their income through playing the sport, we can provide cover.
