Children's Multi-Sports Insurance

Specialist children's sports insurance for coaches and instructors through Insure4Sport

Encouraging children to participate in sports from a young age is hugely important for their health and physical development. But if you’re a children’s sports coach, your job can come with several risks, and you have a duty of care to the children involved.

Accidents can happen at any time, regardless of if you’re doing a fairly low-risk activity like table tennis or a higher-risk sport such as football or hockey.

Whether you teach in schools, sports centres, or just the local park, specialist children’s multi-sports insurance through Insure4Sport can cover a wide range of sports,  helping protect you and your sports equipment should something go wrong.

Please note: Most schools and sports centres will likely ask for proof of Public Liability Insurance before allowing you to coach on the premises.

Why consider children's multi-sports insurance?

Working directly with children in any capacity comes with an element of risk, but having the right insurance in place can bring peace of mind in the event of unforeseen circumstances.

Children's multi-sports insurance through Insure4Sport can provide cover in various scenarios, such as if:

  • You get injured while coaching
  • You or one of the children you're coaching causes damage to the venue you're using for a session
  • Your sports equipment is lost, stolen, or damaged
  • Another coach claims compensation for an injury they sustained while working for you

If you run a children's sports coaching business that employs other coaches and staff, Employers' Liability Insurance is a legal requirement.

Do I need insurance for sports coaching in schools?

There is no legal requirement to have children’s sports insurance, unless, as we mentioned above, you run a related business that employs staff. In that case, you would be required to have Employers’ Liability cover as a minimum. This can protect you if a member of staff makes an injury or illness claim against you.

Most schools and sports centres will also likely ask for proof of Public Liability before you can start working on the premises. However, different schools have different rules, and policies may vary depending on what and where you’re teaching, so it’s always best to check directly with the school you’re working at.

What other certifications do I need to work with children?

Anyone working regularly or unsupervised with children must have an enhanced DBS check. These checks should generally be renewed every few years (although some employers may choose to renew more frequently). This is to check your criminal history and whether you can legally work with children.

Please note: You can’t apply for a DBS check yourself unless you’re self-employed. If you are a self-employed children’s sports coach, you can apply through a governing body. More information can be found on gov.uk.

Some venues or organisations may also require coaches to undergo basic children’s safeguarding and first-aid training.

Children's Multi-Sports Insurance FAQs
  • The cost of children’s multi-sports insurance through Insure4Sport can vary depending on the type and level of cover  you choose.

The quickest and easiest way to get a more accurate cost is by getting a quick quote online.

  • We don’t place restrictions on your location, but if you’re hosting sessions in public spaces, such as parks, we recommend that you request permission from the relevant authorities. If you’re coaching abroad, you would also need to make sure you have Worldwide Cover on your policy.

Appropriate risk assessments should also be carried out according to the location of your children’s sports sessions.

  • You must hold a relevant qualification recognised by a UK national sport governing body for each sport you wish to coach. First aid certificates and qualifications are not a requirement for your insurance, but these may be required to coach at certain venues. You’ll also need a valid DBS check to work with children.
