Why consider fitness instructor insurance

Whether you’re new to the industry or an experienced fitness professional, training clients every day comes with risks.

If you’re injured while demonstrating an exercise and can’t work, fitness instructor insurance can help cover your loss of earnings for up to 52 weeks (after a 14-day excess). It can also financially protect your equipment if it’s stolen or accidentally damaged by a client or member of the public.

Third-party claims are another concern when working with clients. That’s why public liability insurance for fitness instructors through Insure4Sport can include cover up to £10m – so you can build your career with a strong financial safety net in place.

How much is fitness instructor insurance

Fitness instructor insurance FAQs
  • Fitness instructor insurance isn’t a legal requirement in the UK unless you employ others – in which case, you’ll need Employers’ Liability cover. However, many gyms, leisure centres, and local authorities require fitness instructors to hold public liability insurance before allowing them to work on their premises.

  • Yes, but you should only share video content with clients you normally train and have gone through your normal onboarding process. Videos should not be posted in a public domain where people could train from them without your approval and where you have not assessed the suitability of the class for them.

Depending on the type of fitness class you’re running, you can train up to 30 clients online in live or pre-recorded online sessions.

  • Yes – as a fitness instructor, you can coach up to 10 clients as an individual at any one time. If another instructor is running the class with you, you could coach up to 20 clients, as the ratio of coaches to participants is 1:10.

Read the Insurance Scope on our Important Documents page to see a list of the coach-to-client ratios for each fitness class type.

  • Yes – there are no restrictions on where you train, as long as you have permission from the relevant authorities and perform thorough risk assessments before coaching clients at new locations.

  • Want to teach clients abroad? You can add Worldwide Cover to your fitness instructor insurance policy to extend your cover outside of the UK.

  • Yes, as long as the guidance you’re giving falls within the scope of your fitness instructing qualification. According to REPs (The Register of Exercise Professionals), this should be general nutritional advice aimed at helping clients achieve their fitness goals – not prescriptive advice to treat medical conditions.

  • Yes, as long as you have the relevant fitness instructor qualification.

  • If a client is injured and believes your training advice was responsible, they may pursue a claim against you. That’s why having fitness instructor insurance can help make your sessions feel more secure.

With a fitness instructor insurance policy through Insure4Sport, you can receive £1.5m of Public Liability cover as standard, with the option to increase this up to £10m. This cover can help financially protect you against third-party claims for injury or property damage that occur during your sessions.
